Balderton Parish Council is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Newark Town Councillor and former Newark Town Mayor, Laurence Goff.

Affectionately known as “Mr Newark”, Mr Goff was a well-known and friendly face in and around Newark, serving his town and the wider community with pride, energy, and a genuine zest for life. He was widely respected for his tireless fundraising, particularly in support of the A46 Lancaster Bomber Memorial, and for the warmth and good humour he brought to community events — often seen at certain times of the year wearing his much-loved Santa outfit.

Alongside his elected roles, Mr Goff also gave his time in practical and caring ways. He was a St John’s First Aider, a founding member of Newark Community First Aid and regularly checked the parish defibrillators in Balderton. Balderton Parish Council was also proud to welcome him to its VJ Commemoration beacon lighting event in August.

Mr Goff gave his time and energy generously, not only to his town but to communities beyond it and will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who knew him at this sad time.
